On the right team

Core competencies, or the X’s and O’s, are essential for every team, serving as the fundamental elements that define a team’s role within a company. These competencies encompass the skills, knowledge, and abilities that enable a team to perform its primary functions effectively. Ensuring that most of a team’s day-to-day activities align with these core competencies is critical. This alignment helps teams excel in their designated areas, contributing to the overall success of the organization.

It is important for everyone on the team to know these core competencies. A clear understanding among team members directs their efforts towards common goals. Additionally, it prevents misunderstandings and misallocations of tasks and time, ensuring that the team operates smoothly and effectively.

Minimizing overlap in competencies across multiple teams within an organization is equally important. When each team has a distinct set of core competencies, it reduces redundancy and ensures that resources are utilized optimally. This clarity in roles allows for better collaboration and synergy among teams, as each group knows precisely where their expertise lies and when to seek support from others.

When identifying new project opportunities, the Project Manager plays a critical role in evaluating whether the proposed project aligns with the team’s core competencies. For instance, when conducting a Team Survey for a proposed project, the Project Manager should consider how the opportunity fits within the team’s established competencies. If the project does not align well, the Project Manager must coordinate with the appropriate team whose core competencies match the project’s requirements. This approach ensures that projects are handled by the most qualified teams, helping increase the likelihood of project success.
